Bissau is a city in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. Earlier it was known as Vishala Jat Ki Dhani. Churu, Fatehpur and Sikar are some of the nearby cities from here.

Geography of Bissau

Bissau is located at geographical coordinates of 28.25°N and 75.08°E with an average elevation of 292 meters or 958 feet above sea level. It is located around 40km from Jhunjhunu, and around 220 km from the state capital of Jaipur. The city has a good road and rail connectivity to different cities of Rajasthan and rest of India. It is located on the Jhunjhunu - Churu road and State Highway 37 passes through the city. There are frequent RSRTC buses along with private taxis plying on different routes. There is a railway station in Bissau however Churu is the nearest major railway station from here. Jaipur International Airport is the nearest airport from here.

History and Culture of Bissau

Bissau was founded in 1746.. Thakur Shyam Singh was the most famous ruler of Bissau who is considered as the most renowned warriors of his time. Father of Shyam Singh, Thakur Suraj Mal, constructed the Surajgarh Fort in 1778. The present royal family of Bissau resides in Bissau Palace in Jaipur. The rulers of Bissau belong to the Bhojraj clan of Shekhawats, and were the descendants of the famous ruler Maharao Shekha.

Hindi and Rajasthani are the local languages spoken here. As per the census of 2011, city has a population of 23,227 and has a literacy rate of 73.09% .

Tourism in Bissau

The city is famous for Bissau Fort along with many Havelis in the area. Some of the popular havelis visited by tourists include Bajrang Lal Sigatia Haveli, Brij Mohan Kanodia Haveli, Budhar Mal Mertia Haveli, Girdhari Lal Sigatia Haveli, Hari Bax Fatehpuria Haveli and Shri Lal Didwania (Tibrewal) Haveli. The city is also popular for mute Ramleela, one of its kind that is organized here for last 150 years.

One can also explore some of the nearby tourist attractions in   Shekhawati region including Sethani ka Johara, Ratangarh Fort, Digamber Jain Temple, Laxminarayana Temple, Laxmangarh Fort and Tal Chhapar Sanctuary. One can find few hotels to stay while traveling to this part of Rajasthan.
